1. Lauren Luloff
  2. Ocean, Wind, & Still-Life

  3. End of Century is pleased to announce it will be opening doors at 237 Eldridge Street on Friday, October 7th with Ocean, Wind & Still-Life, an exhibition of paintings by artist Lauren Luloff. The Brooklyn based band, Open Ocean, will also be performing a set. Following a year on Rivington Street on the Lower East Side, End of Century closed its doors in August in search of a new space. Ocean, Wind & Still-Life marks the first exhibition at the new location. End of Century is an unconventional platform for creatives that is staged as showroom, store, salon, and exhibition space. The space and its contents are fluid, where everything is impermanent and available for exchange.

  4. In Ocean, Wind & Still-Life; painter Lauren Luloff employs an abstract expressionist brushstroke on a canvas, which in turn she morphs; imbuing each work with a sculptural quality. Through examining the formal properties of the canvas surface, Lauren cuts, stabs, jabs and smooths; resulting in forms reminiscent of bubbles and wings, giving the work an aired element. Heavily oiled colors are smoothed across the canvas expressively and boldly, and interwoven with found objects. Each object, carefully chosen and deeply personal, represents a trace of the painter's journey, a metaphor for the passing and preserving of time.

  5. Taken from the Artist Statement:
  6. "When I create paintings, three dimensionality always creeps in: in the form of collage, cuts in the surface or they become freestanding works. Awkward hand-built structures press against and through the skin of my paintings. Wooden frames erupt and take over whole rooms, leaving fabric clinging in memory of painting. I use bedsheets, referencing home, intimacy, dreams and drama: their crumpling acting as an impasto swoosh, or creating chiaroscuro. Patterns from the sheets offer a harder edge line in contrast with my organic brush marks. The patterns have a nostalgic quality and act as signifiers of moments in one's history."

  7. Lauren Luloff's paintings will be on view from Friday, October 7th to Friday, October 28th. Opening reception from 7PM - 9PM.
